The budget phone has been ‘Made in India’, and the base variant of the Redmi 5A sells for Rs 4,999 and its so called Desh ka Smartphone. Last week, Xiaomi detailed plans to launch a phone that’s going to be the biggest surprise in the Indian smartphone industry.
Xiaomi says it will start shipping the device from December 7 through Flipkart, Mi.com/in, and the company’s own stores and preferred partners. I have had the Redmi 5A for a while now and here is my first impressions.
First Impression of Xiaomi Redmi 5A
It has a plastic body that looks like metal, similar to the Redmi 4A. Also Redmi 5A doesn’t feel like a budget device. The back of the phone is plain with the Mi logo in the center, a speaker grill, and the camera and flash on the top-left. The phone’s layout is standard to say the least.
In terms of hardware specs, the Redmi 5A comes with a 5-inch HD IPS display with a 720p resolution. It is powered by a 1.4GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 processor coupled with Adreno 308 GPU, up to 3GB RAM and up to 32GB of internal memory which is further expandable by up to 128GB via a micro-SD card slot.
Camera on the front the Redmi 5A comes with a 13-megapixel camera on the rear with f/2.2 aperture along with Phase Detection Autofocus and an LED flash. On the front you get a 5-megapixel snapper. The phone is backed by a 3,000mAh battery which is non-removable and is claimed to offer up to a whopping 8-days of battery life on stand-by on a single charge.
Camera of Xiaomi Redmi 5A
You might be thinking the camera performance to be average on the Redmi 5A – after all, the phone only costs Rs 4999. In reality, the Redmi 5A’s 13MP camera is pretty good. Xiaomi Redmi 5A has a 13MP camera on the back and 5MP selfie camera on the front.
We really don’t expect much out of a budget phone, but the Redmi 5A’s camera surprised a lot.
The Xiaomi Redmi 5A will be available in two variants – one with 2GB RAM and 16GB storage, and the other with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage. The device will sell through Flipkart, Mi.com, Mi Homes and other offline retail channels.
Xiaomi is all set to launch its “Desh Ka Smartphone” on November 30. Ahead of its launch, a Flipkart banner has revealed that the device will be exclusive to the online retailer. The announcement also highlights some of the smartphone’s features. As per Flipkart, the device could pack a large battery and a chipset which will offer better multitasking than its competitors.
But most importantly, the Redmi 5A has been designed for India’s masses according to Xiaomi: it’s an entry-level phone designed for feature phone users looking to make a switch to a smartphone. But just because the Redmi 5A is an entry-level phone, it doesn’t mean that it makes a lot of compromises in terms of hardware specs. In fact, at its price point, the Redmi 5A is the most powerful phone that money can buy, and a build quality to match if not better newly launched phones.
